About the Workshop
Guided by a Chartered Health Psychologist, this workshop is designed to specifically support doctors in training. Recognising the demands of combining working, studying and challenges faced in wider life, the workshop aims to help you boost your mental wellbeing so that you're better equipped to cope with the demands you're presented with - and succeed on your pathway. We'll look at how to spot signs of your mental heath declining, alongside improving your awareness and understanding of stress, anxiety & depression. You'll learn how to improve your self-esteem, use mindfulness techniques, how to start conversations about your mental health, and much much more! If you feel you need it, information is also provided on how to access further support, including via your workplace. The course consists of 2.5 hours of online presentations plus around 30 minutes of time to pause and engage in self-directed activities. These activities support you to focus upon yourself as an individual and upon your own mental health specifically. Three additional downloads are available and included, to support you following the course. !!IMPORTANT!! To receive the maximum benefit from the course, it is highly recommended that you try to complete it in one sitting. However, if this is not possible, please be aware that once enrolled, you'll be able to access and re-visit the course for 7 days.

This is a very practical workshop and presented very well. Everything is explained. I don't usually really like doing things like this, but the idea of being more successful obviously appealed to me. I have resisted counselling as I have my doubts about confidentiality when it's accessed through work. So this was a really great alternative and I liked being able to work through it in privacy and quiet at home. I'd highly recommend it, especially if you feel stressed as a trainee, or are finding things difficult in any way.
I wish I'd been able to do this a lot earlier, like as a medical student or FY1, I think I would've had a much better experience if I had, and my mental health wouldn't have suffered due to the demands of training. We all need to know these strategies from the start. Why aren't we all provided with this kind of thing more routinely? We all want to succeed!
I think that as doctors we sometimes expect too much of ourselves. I'd been struggling for a while, since the start of Foundation really, and this workshop was just what I needed. The tips for making lots of small changes/'marginal gains' which can add up, I particularly found useful, and these have made a big difference for me. I'm suddenly coping 100% better at work.
I really haven't been coping, I've been taking time off work to manage, but this means I'm in danger of having missed too much this year. Now I've done this workshop I realise there's really a lot more I can do to help myself get through, which none of my 3 counsellors had told me! It's actually left me feeling positive for the first time in a long time, which surprised me, and I feel confident that I can keep going on my programme now.
